One way to further extend battery life on these phones is to limit background data on Android, according to a report by Tom’s Guide. On the other hand, Apple users can choose to turn off the background app refresh.

This setting is hidden under the settings option of Android devices and iPhones.

Tom’s Guide notes in his report that limiting background app refresh on both Android and iPhones prevents apps from refreshing while not in use.

This essentially cuts the connection of these apps to the Wi-Fi or mobile data while they are in the background. And as such, they could no longer update continuously while users were not using them. In turn, this saves more energy in the long run, boosting the battery life of mobile devices.

However, it’s worth noting that this also means that apps will no longer provide notifications while you’re not using them. Instead, you’ll have to open them to start getting updates again.

But if you really need to get notifications for apps like WhatsApp or Telegram, you can choose to allow these select apps to still refresh the background. With that, it still helps users boost the batteries of their phones, as most apps will still be limited.

According to Verizon, Apple iPhone users have the option to completely turn off the Background App Refresh. Other options will just disable it in “Wi-Fi” or “Wi-Fi and Cellular Data.”

To do this, open the Settings app on your iPhone. Then select the “General” section. From there, tap on the “Refresh background app” to select “Off”, “Wi-Fi” or “Wi-Fi and cellular data” options.

Android users, on the other hand, need to follow these steps.

Go to the Settings app and select the “Mobile Network” option. From there, tap on the Data Usage option. Then scroll down and tap “Save data.” Toggle the apps you want to restrict running in the background.

Not only do you increase your battery, but you also save data at the same time.
