By Ankita Garg: Oppo is the latest tech company to announce a policy that will offer longer software updates to Android users. OnePlus recently revised its software policy and promised to provide additional updates to its buyers. Samsung is the first company to take this initiative earlier this year. It’s good to see more and more smartphone brands supporting it.

Oppo has announced that it will change its software policy for select phones and will now receive four years of Android OS upgrades as well as 5 years of security fixes. However, this policy is eligible for some 2023 premium phones. Since the policy is for 2023 phones, we obviously don’t know the names of the devices that will be able to enjoy this benefit.

Samsung already offers the same support for its devices. The company announced earlier this year that its flagship phones would be eligible to receive four generations of Android OS upgrades and some of the mid-range phones would also fall under the same category. Google is behind in terms of providing longer Android support to Pixel users. It offers a maximum of five years of security updates and four years of OS upgrades.

Oppo also launched its latest ColorOS 13 custom skin for as many as 33 smartphones. The company reportedly released the previous version for less than 50 percent devices. With the latest update now rolling out to more phones, it suggests that Oppo is taking the software seriously.

Why are long software updates for phones important?

It is good to have long-term software updates for those who buy premium phones with the mindset that they will use them for at least three years or more. Support for long software updates will help provide users with smoother performance as the updates usually add new features for more convenience, optimize the system, fix bugs and other things. All this is mandatory for smoother overall performance in the long run as the devices tend to slow down over time for one reason or another. One of them is poor management of storage.
