Watch: Daniel Craig would love to give up his cell phone

Gadgets may have been a way of life for his most famous character, but former James Bond star Daniel Craig would be more than happy to give up the most famous of the lot: his mobile phone.

In a new interview with Yahoo UK ahead of the Netflix release of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Craig revealed that his sympathies lie with a character in the film who deliberately doesn’t own a mobile phone.

“I would be so happy to give mine up,” he admitted. “I think about throwing it away every day. I wish we could!”

The sequel to 2019’s Knives Out sees Craig reprise his role as legendary detective Benoit Blanc and reunite with director/writer Rian Johnson, who helmed the original.

However, the Last Jedi director has more of a love/hate relationship with his cell phone, preferring something more retro. “I wish we could get back to land lines,” he said.

“I love having this device that I can do all these things on, but I know my life will be so much healthier if I throw it away. I would just have a fax machine. And an old green plastic landline.”

In the film, Blanc returns to solve a complicated mystery surrounding tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) and his group of eccentric friends. Bron invites them all to his Greek hideout through a series of intricate riddles and, when what’s supposed to be a practical joke turns deadly serious, it’s up to Blanc to solve his most baffling mystery yet.

Among the star-studded ensemble is Janelle Monae who plays a fellow techie wronged by Bron in the past. Monae admits she is tempted to get rid of her mobile phone, but feels there must be balance in the way they are used. “If it could fly somewhere in space, that would be great,” she explained.

“Personally, I think cell phones are stressful, but if I didn’t have one, my family and friends would be worried. I delete apps from my phone and I keep it very simple and try not to go on social media a lot. You want to stay present. You don’t want to miss the moment to actually just be here and have an experience.”

Like Craig, co-star Kate Hudson would love to ditch her phone. “If someone said ‘everything is going to exist as it is, but you have to throw away your phone,’ I would say goodbye to my phone,” she said. “I like not having one. I think all the anxiety that so many of us feel is because of these tablets.”

Madelyn Cline, who plays the influencer Whiskey in the film, tried to do without her phone and described it as “nice and it feels very quiet, but when I lose my phone or it’s broken or I can’t access my ordinary lines do not. of communicating with people, I feel really, really anxious.”
