“It started when a friend came back to our hometown to visit,” wrote the woman, who is from the US.

“I was at my bf’s place that night. We drank and had a good time…and we all got along.

“His friend made a joke about his criminal record. I immediately thought, ‘Criminal record? What criminal record?’

“Bf gave him a look that clearly told him to shut up and I could tell his friend knew he f***** up.”

When the woman asked her boyfriend about it, he told her it was nothing and said they would talk about it later.

But the mood in the room changed, so the friend left the couple to talk about it.

The boyfriend then confessed that he had been arrested on two separate occasions for assault and other charges.

“He said it was just fights and they happen,” she wrote.

“I’ve never been in a physical altercation in my life, but guys fight sometimes I know.”

But he wasn’t done. There was more to his criminal past.

“THEN he tells me he also robbed 2 different stores and never got caught,” the woman said.

“He broke into a local eatery at night and took money from the cash register.

“He did it at another shop, but didn’t take anything.

“I didn’t really say anything. I didn’t know what to say. He was very upset and apologetic.”

What to do?

Deciding to take a break from her boyfriend, the woman turned to Reddit for advice on what to do next.

“I don’t know what to think,” she said.

“He lied to me the whole time we’ve known each other… He said he didn’t want to tell me because he didn’t want me to leave him.

“I never thought he would ever be violent. He’s like the sweetest guy I’ve ever been with.

“The more I think about it, I’m kind of crazy. This is a big secret to loving your gf in my opinion.

“I feel like there must be more he’s not telling me, but I could be wrong.

“Is this a situation where I definitely have to break up with him?”

Type of iceberg?

Reddit users were shocked by the woman’s story.

“His friend was probably itching to understand how you feel about that kind of thing because that might be the tip of the iceberg,” one person speculated. “I wouldn’t stay there if I were you.”

“I don’t even know what’s more alarming – the fact that he has a criminal background or the fact that he hid it from you and it was only accidentally revealed,” another person wrote.

“They’re always the sweetest until they’re not,” said another.

Some commentators advised the woman to take matters into her own hands and find out the facts herself.

“If you haven’t looked him up yet, please do,” someone said.

“Find out all the counties he lived in and go to their county clerk websites,” wrote another. “That’s usually where you’ll find criminal and civil case records.”

“You can often find court records online,” wrote a third. “They won’t be detailed, but they will include what the charges were for and when they happened.”
