Will the 2024 4Runner Be Redesigned?
That’s the question on everyone’s mind, will the beloved 2024 Toyota 4Runner SUV get a redesign? Some fans prefer Toyota to drop a redesigned 2024 4Runner later this year, but that could be pushed back to 2025. Most of the other cars, trucks, and SUVs in the lineup have already received a significant update, and the 4Runner could be next.
Has the 2024 Toyota 4Runner been delayed?
It’s not that the 2024 Toyota 4Runner has been delayed, but the redesign of the 4Runner has been delayed. Gear Patrol says the 2024 4Runner will happen, hopefully later this year, but everything is speculation until Toyota confirms it. The current 4Runner is on the fifth generation that started in 2009, and the current version only gets 20 mpg on the highway. In other words, it needs an update. However, Toyota could delay the 4Runner until 2025 and give it another minor update.
In 2022, Toyota updated the Tundra, and the Sequoia received an update for this year. The automaker also updated the 4Runner for 2023, offering a retro 40th Anniversary Special Edition. That means the earliest a 2024 4Runner would hit the scene is later this year. The automaker announced the 40th Anniversary Special Edition in May, leaving several months of speculation.
There have also been rumors of a new Toyota Land Cruiser returning to the US markets. Depending on what the brand decides is more important, the 4Runner could be further slowed down by a Land Cruiser. Toyota has also not confirmed at this stage.

Toyota is moving the current lineup of body-on-frame trucks and SUVs to the brand’s new TNGA-F truck platform. The TNGA-F platform underpins the J300 Land Cruiser, Lexus LX 600 and 2023 Sequoia. It would make sense if the brand uses a smaller version for the hypothetical 2024 4Runner and a new Tacoma.
Additionally, the 4Runner could get an engine change like the rest of the lineup. Toyota has moved trucks and SUVs to more fuel-efficient engines, such as the new 2.4L inline-four in the Lexus NX 350. It gets 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, a big improvement over the current V6.
Toyota says all vehicles will get a hybrid option by 2025, so a hybrid 4Runner should be in the cards. Gear Patrol suggests that the 2.4L Hybrid Max powertrain in the 2023 Toyota Corolla Crown could work with the 2024 4Runner. Even if the 2024 4Runner doesn’t get a complete facelift, it will hopefully be more fuel efficient than the current version.
Toyota may delay the 4Runner until 2025 at this point
Toyota released its year-end 2022 US sales results last month, which show how much each car, truck and SUV sold over the year. The 4Runner sold 7,291 units, down from 14,851 in 2021. The Highlander, RAV4, Tacoma and Tundra outsold the 4Runner every year (except for the Tundra in ’21).
The 4Runner doesn’t seem to be a priority for the brand and isn’t one of its top sellers. Although popular among SUV and truck enthusiasts, Toyota doesn’t sell as many as one might think.
Most recent rumblings suggest that a 2024 4Runner will get another minor update, but a 2025 4Runner could be in the works. For now, here are three reasons to love the 2023 Toyota 4Runner while everyone waits for the automaker’s next move.
