PROVO, UT – The Lions fell to the BYU Cougars, 42-67, on Saturday afternoon.
LMU opened the game with a made jumper by Nicole Rodriguez, but the Lions would struggle offensively for the next eight minutes. The Cougars scored the next 10 points, and the Lions would not score again until the final minute of the game. BYU led, 3-12.
At the start of the second quarter, the Lions were able to get within five points of the Cougars thanks to two back-to-back baskets from Alexis Mark and Khari Clark. With 4:22 left in the quarter, BYU would gain momentum by scoring 10 straight points to extend their lead to 18, 12-30. The Cougars went on another streak at the under two minute mark and scored seven more points. LMU trailed BYU 13-37 at halftime.
In the second half, BYU opened the quarter with a 3-pointer, but Clark answered with two jump shots for LMU. Both the Lions and Cougars were 42 percent from the field in the third. Even though LMU was down by 30 with 1:19 left in the quarter, they never gave up. With time running out, Se’Quoia Allmond nailed a three, at the buzzer, for the Lions. BYU still led LMU 27-54 at the end of the quarter.
Despite being 27 down, the Lions held on in fourth place. LMU outscored BYU by two, totaling 15 points in the quarter compared to the Cougars 13. BYU would end up winning the game and LMU lost their final conference road trip, 42-67.
Clark led the Lions with 11 points while Amaya Oliver led with nine rebounds.
The Lions’ next game will be on February 18 against the Pepperdine Waves.
