New mobile app helps diners save money, cut down on food waste

A new triple-threat mobile app has made its debut in San Antonio. Too Good To Go enables users to save money, fill their bellies and eliminate food waste at nearby restaurants with a few easy clicks.

The Denmark-based business partners with restaurants to provide deals — some as cheap as $3.99 in San Antonio — on bags filled with food that the restaurants would otherwise toss in the trash at the end of the day. Too Good To Go launched in Europe in 2015 and reached US territory in 2020. This month, the brand expanded its Texas footprint with a presence in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Operating in Austin since 2021, Too Good To Go currently works with over 450 restaurants and other businesses across the state.

“We are excited to expand our app across Texas to partner with the dynamic food scene and culture,” Too Good To Go CEO Chris MacAulay said in a media release. “Partnering with the incredible local food businesses across Texas, we want to make reducing food waste accessible to everyone. Together, with the amazing restaurant community and residents in Texas, we know we will have an immediate impact.”

The Too Good To Go mobile app is free to use. Most orders are around $5 per bag.

Users will usually not know exactly what is contained in each order, as restaurant inventory may vary at the end of each day. The app offers what are called “Surprise Bags” at a steep discount above the restaurant’s normal retail prices that can be picked up by customers.

COMPOST QUEENS: San Antonio’s Compost Queens take food from landfills to replenish the soil

Currently, only a small handful of San Antonio restaurants participate in the program. Recent offerings include desserts from Baklovah Bakery & Sweets and Alebrije Bakery, food from restaurants Zaatar Lebanese Grill, A Way To The Heart and Pasha, and groceries from Indian Supermarket, among others. Prices ranged from $3.99 to $12.

According to Too Good To Go, approximately 133 billion pounds of food worth approximately $161 billion is wasted in the US each year. Since debuting in this country, Too Good To Go says it has saved more than 5.5 million meals from landfills by working with more than 11,000 businesses here.

The Too Good To Go app is available on both iOS and Android platforms. More information and registration for participants can be found at toogoodtogo.com.
